About ITSRR
ITSRR has three key roles:
- Administering rail safety legislation
- Reporting on the reliability and sustainability of publicly funded transport services
- Strategic coordination of safety regulation across transport modes of rail, bus and ferry
ITSRR administers rail safety by ensuring rail operators have safety management systems that meet legislated requirements and focus on improving safety culture and processes. ITSRR does this through accrediting rail operators and conducting audits and compliance inspections. ITSRR identifies and alerts the rail industry to potential safety issues.
ITSRR provides advice to Government and publishes reports on the performance and reliability of publicly funded transport which includes rail, bus and ferry services. ITSRR's service reliability reports reflect rail industry performance, the longer term viability of transport networks and rail customer attitudes through surveys and analysis.
ITSRR is responsible for rail safety regulation, the Ministry of Transport is responsible for bus safety regulation and NSW Maritime is responsible for ferry safety.
In hosting the Transport Regulators Executive Committee (TREC), ITSRR works in partnership with the Ministry of Transport and NSW Maritime to deliver better coordinated strategy, policy and regulation across transport modes; and provide accurate, consistent and comprehensive portfolio-wide advice and support to Government on transport safety and reliability.
On this website you will find information about ITSRR, educational material for industry , statistics, relevant legislation, regulations and guidelines, fact sheets, newsletters, media statements, forms, and links to other relevant websites.
One of ITSRR’s current responsibilities is the implementation of the NSW Government response to the Special Commission of Inquiry (SCOI) into the Waterfall Rail Accident. ITSRR is required to report quarterly to the Minister for Transport detailing progress of the implementation.
