Asset management project takes shape

15 June 2012
The Independent Transport Safety Regulator (ITSR) has now engaged with more than a dozen rail transport operators seeking to better understand action they can take on asset management to improve safety and profitability.

ITSR Chief Executive, Len Neist, said the interest shown by these operators followed a workshop held in April on the subject.

“The workshop was an opportunity to discuss the safety and business benefits of asset management and for operators to provide ITSR with their feedback on effective ways for the rail industry to collaborate on implementing asset management,” Len said.

“Input from the attendees helped ITSR plan a number of activities aimed at improving safety in the rail industry through an asset management approach.”

The planned activities include publishing practical information and resources, hosting more industry workshops and training events and providing assurance reviews to help rail operators understand the strengths and opportunities in their current asset management programs.

Videos of the presentations made by ITSR and guest speakers at the April workshop can now be viewed via an online portal.

Access to the videos is also available through the asset management page on ITSR’s website.

“The interest already shown by a number of rail transport operators in talking with ITSR about asset management demonstrates the commitment of the industry in pursuing the potential safety and business benefits from this systems approach,” Len added.
