ITSRR has a statutory responsibility to publish information that it deems necessary for the safe operation of the NSW transport system.
The statistics presented on this website are based on incident notifications from all NSW rail operators (not just major operators as traditionally reported). As a result of this change, historic incident counts will differ to that reported previously.
Rail Incidents
Incidents recorded in the ITSRR database are classified in accordance with the National Occurrence Standard for Rail Incident Classification (ONS1). The ONS1 classification system allows monitoring of the following rail incident types: Fatalities, Derailments, Collisions, Broken Rail, SPADs (signals passed at danger).
