Running Line Collisions

The old ON-S1 national classification scheme did not distinguish between collisions on running lines and collisions in sidings. This distinction was made in NSW data and exists in the new OC-G1 classification scheme.

There are eight categories of collision in OC-G1 based on the type of object struck, for example train striking a train, a vehicle or an animal. Five categories of collision are reported nationally: train, rolling stock, infrastructure, person and road vehicle (the latter two exclude occurrences at level crossings).

The Annual Industry Safety Report 2007-08 shows that most train to train collisions on running lines in NSW involve being struck by out-of-gauge load or rolling stock components, for example swinging doors on freight trains. A smaller number involve track machines on sections of running line not fully closed to normal traffic.

The graph below displays the latest published data on running line collisions in NSW.
