Fatalities

A fatality is defined as a person who dies from injuries sustained in a railway occurrence. The data presented here will generally exclude fatalities which are the direct result of a health-related condition where this is evident in the initial occurrence report.

The Annual Industry Safety Report 2007-08 shows that the highest number of fatalities are associated with trespasser activity / suspected suicide.  Unlike national reporting, trespasser and suicide are combined as a single category here because it is difficult to determine with certainty whether a fatality is the result of trespass or suicide.

The graph below displays the latest published data on fatalities in NSW.
