Level Crossing Collisions

There are more than 3,800 level crossings in NSW and most are located in regional areas. About 1,370 of these are crossings on publicly accessible roads. They represent the main point of interaction between rail and road and pose a high risk for serious collisions between trains and road vehicles.

Two subcategories of level crossing collisions are reported at a national level – collision of train with road motor vehicle and collision of train with person (both of which exclude occurrences reported as suspected suicide). The Annual Industry Safety Report 2007-08 shows a long term decrease in the number of train to road vehicle collisions while the number of collisions with people remains low.

The graph below displays the latest published data on level crossing collisions in NSW.
