National Rail Occurrence Data
ITSRR, along with other State and Territory rail safety regulators, provides data every six months on selected rail safety occurrences to the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB).
The data is classified according to the national reporting and classification scheme (OC-G1).
When comparing data at the national level, the ATSB takes into account differences in the size of each State and Territory’s rail operations, where measures of such differences are available.
Readers should note the following important features concerning the NSW Rail Safety Occurrence Data on the ITSRR website and the national data on the ATSB website.
- NSW data presented on the ITSRR website include occurrence notifications from all accredited operators in NSW. The ATSB data exclude occurrences associated with monorail and light rail.
- NSW data presented on the ITSRR website is classified according to OC-G1 for the entire reporting period. The ATSB data is classified according to OC-G1 only from July 2008 onwards.
- The grading of injury severity under OC-G1 is problematic and different definitions of serious injury are being used by different operators and jurisdictions. Serious injury data is currently not of sufficient quality for publication.
- All States and Territories have ongoing programs to identify and fill gaps in historical data, validate data received and update the classification of specific incidents in line with new information received. Numbers reported here may change in the future.
